Marathon Running Essentials

Marathon Running Essentials

Hi Everyone,

Marathon Running Essentials

The first post yayy :) I want to share about the Marathon Running Essentials. To complete a long distance run/ marathon hassle free, it is very important to go to the race with some running essentials. I am sharing the running essentials that I carried and I forgot to carry to my last endurance race.

1. Hooded cap

Marathon Running Essentials

It is a cap which provides extra shielding from the sun rays. The main challenge with long distance races is to bear with the weather. Sunny or windy weather causes tanning or discomfort respt while running. This type of cap has an extra clothing attached to the back of the cap to cover the back neck and upper back area. Basically it covers the area that is exposed to the sun.

I made my pillow dogi wear the cap :P

2. Sunnies

Marathon Running Essentials

One should not run in the sun or wind without the sunnies. As sunnies protects the eyes. I ran my first half marathon without sunnies and I had a severe headache later.

3. Torch Caps

Marathon Running Essentials

If you are running overnight or starting really early in the morning then these caps are very essential. They have an inbuilt torch in them which will guide you on the path. My last ultramarathon started at 5 am in the jungle. It was dark and shady :P . I did not carry this cap with me so I had to run behind others, till the time there was light gain.

4. Carry a water bottle

Marathon Running Essentials

The best thing to do during any race is to stay hydrated. Although all race organizers place camps at a frequent distance, on the running track. But what if you are really thirsty and there is no aid station around? So it is better to run with a small bottle in hand. You can have glucose or juice or simple water in that bottle. Whenever you feel thirsty just sip sip while running. I run with this small bottle.

5. Running Shoes

Marathon Running Essentials

Do not run in normal shoes. It gives injuries. Normal shoes are not meant to absorb the shock of the foot striking the ground so they transfer the shock to the ankles or shin or knees. Get good running shoes, practice in them and get your feet used to them before the race.

A good shoe should have
1) Good cushioning
2) Good grip
and it should be of proper size

6. Good carbs

Carry some good carbs like snickers, banana, chocolates etc with you. Although all these things are provided on the aid station but if you are used to eat something particular while running then carry it. You can have a light waist pouch and keep all these basic things in it.

Other things

While practicing for a long distance race be prepared for bruises, blisters, chaffing and sprains :P .. Get yourself surgical tapes for the blisters.

Marathon Running Essentials

You may also get chaffing in your inner thighs.  To deal with it apply vaseline petroleum jelly on your inner things. For sprains use volini spray and knee caps. These things make life easier on a long distance race. You get all these things at the aid stations on the track but still if you want you can carry them in your pouch. Also when you start training for the race, you will start needing atleast the shoes, the surgical tapes, vaseline, and sprays :P

These were certain tangible marathon essentials. Apart from these carry a wonderful smile and a killer attitude to the race. It is all in the mind. Come out of your skin, your believes, your mindblocks and create a new milestone for yourself :) )

Next I will write about carbo loading, diet and training before the race. btw.. how many of you are soon running a marathon? I am running Airtel Delhi half marathon on 15th dec. Anyone coming for it? :)

though I run regularly but I still don’t have the stamina for lung runs or a race :( Mostly I run (outdoor) to be fit and I set my speed according to my mood. :P

Nidhi..forget running. I don’t know abc of a good workout. I mean, I have been taking classes and joining gyms…working out on and off from last 10years. I have used gym equipment like treadmills, stair masters, went to spinning classes, yoga, aerobics, Pilates and once I had a coach for 3 months to guide me in weight training! All this was in US. It was like jack of all trades, master of none. I don’t know if I am making any sense but I feel I am such a dumbo when it comes to working out. I hope I can learn some pointers here from you. And I hope one day I enroll in atleast a 5k marathon!

Aww Tanvi.. you have done so much you must have a good muscle memory. Please start training again and you will soon find yourself coping up with things .. 5k is just a half an hour deal.. challenge yourself to finish it one day :)

  7. Shruti,

Here comes my comment :D :D brilliantly written as always! It felt so good to read it the green topi is just too cute and you know I’m wearing surgical tapes right now also, where I pulled my muscle :P Can’t wait to start running again. I stopped running after Muay Thai. Also it was a bit too much for my knees at that time, but I think that was because I overdid it. Abhi theek se, planning to complete a full marathon next year around May. Let’s see :) I was that torch wali cap :P Looking fwd :D

Vini.. No if you eat compensate running with food then no you won’t lose weight. In turn will increase stamina. Walk and run alternatively.. :) Some people can run fast and some cannot.. I am writing on that
