Summer Solstice Yoga Times Square 2014
I want to share an awesome experience that I had in new york recently. As 21st June is the longest day of the summer, also called summer solstice, so here in NYC, 12 years back, some yoga teachers, started an event on yoga to welcome this day. They do yoga for full day on times square. They have many 1 hour classes, which are from 5:30 am till 9 pm. All the classes are taken by some of the best teachers of the city.
Think of every thing big and flashy. It is times square. Big buildings, stretching extreme inches into the sky. It feels as if these, buildings are covering us, instead of the sky. You name a car and you could see it running on the roads. You name a brand and you find the biggest showroom of it, brimming with people. It is a place which has crazy traffic all time. People of myriad fashion could be seen here. Basically, it is the heart of the city. People from world over, dream of working at times square.
On 21st June, all of this hustle and bustle is stopped for a day, and people from all over the city are invited to do yoga in the open air. The organizers provide the participants with mats, water bottles, energy bars etc. All they expect is people to come in large numbers and experience yoga.
Moreover, the next day, as a part of this summer solstice, there were conferences at Marriot Marquis hotel at times square. The conferences had lectures from experts on Ayurveda, Meditation, Yoga etc. I attended one lecture on Ayurveda.
Being an Indian, it felt so amazing to see so many people in the western world, adapting and respecting our yogic science. I felt so much at home, when we all did Om chants and other chants on the yoga day. Infact, the lecture on ayurveda was also very comprehensive. All the basics of ayurveda was told to us. Again an amazing experience to witness ayurveda so widely and lovingly accepted as a way of life.
The event gave me an opportunity to meet with some amazing ashtanga practitioners, who visit India every year for their practice with their gurus in India. I felt so inspired. This city has taught me one very important thing – “This world is a global village. Look at the world with open eyes and pick up whatever good you get from wherever” So much to learn each day
On the yoga day, Abhishek made a small video of mine, which I have uploaded on our new youtube channel . I hope you like it. I will put more videos on it as and when I get the opportunity. Also, sorry for this rectangle video We found out a way to make a full screen video with our phone. We will use it next time.
We also went to a village in upstate new york for the weekend. The village is cold spring. It is a 1 hour journey by train from manhattan. The train journey is by the side of hudson river. It is amazingly scenic. As usual, we took our travel stash with us. The stash has home made paranthas and curry, vegetable sandwiches and fruits. So on that day, we actually, did not have to eat out at all. We sat in the park and ate our food by the river side. We are able to do travel every weekend because we do not eat out much otherwise we would have all the reasons to feel heavy and bloated and not go for travels so often. But that does not that we do not eat out at all. We do eat out but we try not to have all out meals out.
We were trekking in the forest, we were kind of lost, when we came across a mulberry (shehtoot) tree. It was full of sweet mulberries. We literally raided the tree. We realized that the real organic and natural food is available only when we go close to the nature . As always, sharing some pics with you.

Ahh well! I am receiving so many rants and cribs and sad smileys in mails and messages these days. Ankita is upset of her abrupt shift timings at work, which are ruining her fitness plans. Neha is agonized by long travel time to office. Some one just joined the gym and is irritated by the trainer. I am patiently reading all of your whining. Believe me, I am not overlooking or letting go anything that you share with me . I want to say that all of you have done awesome in life so far. If these days, you do not feel as fit or motivated as you use to feel in the past, then remember that this is just a phase of life. It will pass away. I can say this because you have already started getting frustrated or jittery about it. This is the reason you are trying to reach out for help, which is a very good sign. Realizing is always the first step towards any advancement and questioning is the next. So you are almost on the verge of getting over with this phase Okay enough gyan . I also have something to crib now . I also realized something. It is that I should start answering all the queries soon. Infact I have reached the second stage too. I have started questioning myself that why haven’t I till now not thought of some solution for addressing the reader’s queries? Ahem Now, the next step to advancement, after realization and questioning is finding the right way to deal with it and start doing it
So I am looking into it and will be back with a solution shortly. Till then bombard my inbox with more fitness cribs . Some more bigger road trips coming up along with a lot of socializing. It already started from saturday night. So I may bot be able to keep very active on the blog, in the coming days but I will stay active on fb and instagram and keep sharing something on fitness daily
